Hokkaido University sent 2 students to The 4th World Student Environmental Summit
The 4th World Student Environmental Summit (WSES) was held in Sweden from May 18 to 21, 2011. Participants from Hokkaido University were Ms. Naho Osumi (in the second year of a master’s degree program at the Graduate School of Economics and Business Administration) and Mr. Pedcris Miralles Orencio (a second-year student at the Faculty of Environmental Earth Science).
The following is a report from Ms. Osumi:
Activities
The 4th World Student Environmental Summit explored the three-part theme of Conserve, Create and Collaborate, and workshops were held over a period of three days, each with a focus on a different theme. In the workshops, lectures by distinguished speakers on challenges facing contemporary society were followed by group work, in w hich we exchanged views and opinions on topics such as solutions to related challenges and the creation of a new community for sustainable development. In a workshop dsigned to introduce the initiatives taken by participants’ universities, Hokkaido University was prasied for teh dynamic nature of its administrative activities compared to those of other institutions.
Findings
The session made me realize that our university has few self-motivated student activities, which tend to flourish more at other institutions. We also had outdoor experiential learning opportunities involving compost formation and reclamation of land on an eco-farm. The summit left a strong impression on me because of the variety of opportunities it provided for us to consider sustainability in our lifestyles, such as accommodation in natural surroundings, vegetarian dishes and outdoor activities.
For the Future
I participated in the summit from an economics and business administration perspective, but realized the need to approach the single issue of sustainability in all areas, rather than just in the disciplines of economics and business administration, and to promote worldwide cooperation with this as a global challenge. As a member of the generation that will shape the future, I also came to better understanding that our role involves not just promoting global development but also defining how to achieve it and how we can join forces to reach the goal of sustainable development. I would like to make this invaluable experience known to people through the Sustainability Weeks event and to help launch a lively program of campus activities by taking full advantage of the extensive network I have cultivated through the people I met at the summit. I would also like to continue my efforts after graduation; as a business person, I will make efforts to establish the concept of sustainability in the business community in light of the important role private businesses also have to play in achieving it.
